Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could devote all daytime hours to reading, art or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art was a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who had a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. Though DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the iconic civil rights demonstration across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent community of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there were later the inspiration to direct a movie on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate of Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at in the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was in her the college. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash at the residence that belonged to a member of the jury. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she decided to switch careers into the publicity business. DuVernay was brought on straight after graduating from college as a junior publicist at the studio that was small. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The agency has launched a wide range of lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye. Following a childhood within New York City, Mitchell obtained a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of Pennsylvania.
